How do I know if a cigar has been well stored?
Smoking will provide the ultimate proof of how the cigar has been stored, but there can be some tell-tale signs. If the cigars have lacked sufficient humidification for an extended period of time, damage to the wrapper will often occur.
Variations in the colour of the wrapper can also be an indication that the cigars were exposed to direct sunlight. It's the accompanying fluctuations in temperature and humidity which negatively affect the taste of the cigars, and not the colour variations per se.
Long time cigar smokers will recognize a dry premium cigar by touching the surface of the wrapper and pressing on the cigar. If, however, it had once been dry and then was revitalized in the humidor, this will often only show up in the taste when it is smoked.
As with other problems encountered with cigars (e.g., tobacco beetle infestation), buying from trusted and experienced tobacconists, either online or in a shop, is the best guarantee for a perfectly stored cigar.
